A&P Hires Metzger As Chief Information Officer
MONTVALE, N.J. - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc. announced that John E. Metzger has been appointed senior vice president and chief information officer of the supermarket chain, one of the oldest in North America. He reports to Christian Haub, the chairman, president and CEO. He succeeds Nicholas L. Ioli Jr., who left A&P to pursue other opportunities, according to the company.

Metzger joined A&P in 1999 as vice president, supply & logistics, and was promoted in 2001 to senior vice president and business leader of its supply chain and business process initiative. Previously, Metzger was senior vice president of CS Integrated LLC and earlier held logistics and distribution management jobs at RJR Nabisco and Standard Brands.

Founded in 1859, A&P was one of the nation's first supermarket chains and today is one of North America's 10 largest with 740 stores in 15 states.

High-Profile CIOs Named to TightLink Board
BERKELEY, Calif. - A trio of high-profile current and former CIOs were recently named to the advisory board of TightLink Corp., a provider of collaborative service software. They are:

  • Dave Evans, former senior vice president and CIO at JC Penney. Evans was also member of the JC Penney executive committee before retiring in 2000. He was named CIO of the Year in 1993 by Information Week magazine and was named to the CIO Hall of Fame by CIO magazine in 1997.
  • Paul Gaffney, CIO at Staples. Prior to Staples, Gaffney was senior vice president of Schwab Technology, the technology enterprise of Charles Schwab & Co. Earlier he held senior management positions at Office Depot, Website Pros, Kmart Corp., Uniquest and Computer Sciences Corp.
  • Marina Levinson, vice president and CIO at Palm Inc. Prior to joining Palm, Levinson was senior director of Global Integration at 3Com, where she was responsible for all IS activities for deployment of SAP applications.

Financial Services Giant Taps Tech Exec
SEATTLE - Financial services firm Washington Mutual Inc. has hired Eric Porck to be its first vice president in its corporate technology division. Porck has held senior-level technology positions at several companies including Avenue A, where he was director of information technology; SAFECO Corp., where he redesigned e-commerce and WAN infrastructure as director of network architecture; and MCI Systems Engineering, where he worked as program manager for an advanced Internet services group.

Tech Veteran Named CIO of Avnet
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Avnet Inc. recently named Robert W. Mason to be its new vice president and CIO, effective March 4. He will lead the global IT strategy for the technology marketing and services company. Mason has more than 25 years of experience in corporate information systems for Fortune 100 companies. He previously served as executive vice president and CIO for Cendant Corp., and earlier held executive positions at Pinacor, Anheuser Busch, GE Lighting and Johnson & Johnson.

Soft Drink Maker Names New CIO
TORONTO - Soft drink supplier Cott Corp. has appointed Douglas P. Neary to the position of vice president and chief information officer. He will have overall responsibility for directing Cott's IT organization in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Neary most recently served as a management consultant to Cott, developing strategies for its information technology systems and its e-business links to customers and suppliers. His professional experience includes business unit management with IBM Global Services. He has also held positions with Cap Gemini Sogetti, Day & Zimmerman and Network Systems Integrators.
